Easter Fat Roundup

April 9, 2012

While the big fat story this week has been talk of lowering the BMI numbers even more so that another new group of people can be called fat and unhealthy, let’s take a look at some other current fat-related news.

  • Weight Watchers, which never looks a gift horse (or celebrity shill) in the mouth, allegedly struck a three-million dollar deal with Jessica Simpson in which she will use the program to shed the pounds she gains during her pregnancy. Simpson, who was ridiculed a few years ago for daring to be a size eight, has been criticized again for daring to become big while pregnant.
  • The women’s magazine Redbook is currently holding a Wedding Dress Challenge where thirteen women and two men are dieting down to the weight they were on their wedding day. No word on whether Redbook will hold a sequel for the competition when they regain the weight in five years.
  • The Fat Girl Flea Market has a new name: Big Fat Flea. The NYC-based event will have men’s clothes this year, hence the name change. It will be held on Sunday, May 13. A word of warning: all proceeds go to NOLOSE, so if you don’t want to give your money to this organization after all the drama that went down with them, skip it.
  • Ragen over at Dances With Fat has posted about Citizen’s Medical Center, a hospital in Victoria, Texas that won’t hire employees with a BMI over 35 because they feel they don’t fit the appearance and example of providing quality healthcare to patients. There are links on the thread if you want to contact CMC  over this discriminatory practice.
  • First Lady Michelle Obama was on The Biggest Loser this week working out with the contestants at The White House, which strengthens arguments that her Let’s Move program to get rid of fat kids is nothing more than state-sanctioned bullying.

Finally, I leave you with a fat-positive image that is especially fitting for this past weekend:

Herman, the German Giant Bunny

I hope you all had a great Easter, a great Passover,  and a great spring weekend!

And don’t forget Carnie Wilson undergoing lapband surgery on top of her previous WLS – that was all over TV last night with the premiere of that show about Wilson Philips (I didn’t watch it – just reading about it in the news was bad enough).

Yeah, that just blows me away. Because the first WLS worked so well and all, right? :/

I’m very disappointed to hear this about Carnie. I thought I saw or read some interview(s) with her ( not too long ago ) where she was touting the “Fuck You, This is Just How I Look – So Get Over It” attitude regarding her not being “perfectly thin” any longer. I was kind of proud of her bucking the Celebs-Gotta-Be-Thin! system.
Now she’s going to do the lapband?? *sigh* soooo disappointed.

I wonder if that’s Darius, the world’s biggest rabbit. I was reading about him yesterday.
Interstingly, I had a Daria, who died in December of 2010 at the age of 8. She might not have been the world’s smallest rabbit, but she was pretty small. She was a Netherland dwarf. She weighed 2 pounds.

About Jessica Simpson, yeah how dare women gain weight while pregnant, you know something that has occurred since the beginning of time. Soon we’ll be telling women it’s unhealthy for the baby that they gain weight during pregnancy, who cares if the baby starves to death from a lack of nutrients? Wait, that already happened?

One of my friends told me that her husband’s mother is always giving little snide comments about my friend’s weight while bragging about what a wonderful slim physique she (the mother in law) has. My friend says she’s always resisted asking her mother in law how osteoporosis is working for her or if she thinks that being deliberately underweight during pregnancy contributed to the problems her son has with his eyes.

Man, each one of these items warrants a full-on post by itself, like the Wedding Dress Challenge, which began as a MeMe Roth project. And I caught part of the Biggest Loser White House special at the gym and it made my heartrate spike to 180 (just kidding). Thank you, Michelle Obama, for endorsing an unhealthy, abusive television show and giving it national recognition, while ignoring the Strong4Life campaign’s attack on fat kids. And we wonder why this country’s priorities are so fucked up.

“A word of warning: all proceeds go to NOLOSE, so if you don’t want to give your money to this organization after all the drama that went down with them, skip it.”

Wow. What was the point of that?

The point of that, Cam, is that people like to know exactly where their donations are going. I have limited dollars to donate, and I want to make sure that the best use is going to be made of the money I donate. If you want to donate to them, you’re welcome to do so, as is anyone else. But frankly, I appreciated the heads up.
