Maya Angelou, Gone Today

May 28, 2014

Normally, I like to shut my mouth and think when someone of incredible importance passes away. I take a few minutes to think about how the world will be a little less enjoyable without their contributions, the state of their lives when they died and the immeasurable sadness that must be felt by their family and closest friends.

However, when someone so revered and filled with promise dies, it’s a tragedy we all feel.

Today, Maya Angelou died at her home in North Carolina and never was there a better example of a life fully lived and well spent or a loss so large that it will reverberate for years to come through the global literary, civil rights, and education communities.

Her legacy is one only Titans can cultivate and her accomplishments are too vast and staggering to fully list without taking up fourteen pages, but she remained a force to be reckoned with, a voice that made you sit up and listen, and an unwavering pupil of life who set a standard so towering that we would all be lucky to achieve a tenth of.

She will be missed.

My heart is full right now. It’s full with grief at the passing of a great woman, and with gratitude for all the wonder and grace and beauty and hard truth she brought to my life.
